I’ve been interested in photography, off and on, for most of my life. My dad once worked for Kodak, and so we always had a camera in the house when I was growing up. I have childhood memories of learning all about how to use one – a Kodak Retinette – as a cub scout, and earning my ‘badge’. I can recall being taught all about apertures, shutter speeds, film speeds, depth of field, focussing, and much else, with my father’s encouragement, by a photography enthusiast from the village in Wales where we lived.
Ever since those early learning days, my interest has continued. I have owned many different cameras and I’ve also been lucky enough to travel a great deal, seeing some wonderful sights of the world around us. Whenever possible I’ve tried to record those scenes and experiences onto film, and latterly onto digital media. If I had to pick out one photograph from the thousands I have made over the years, I think it would probably be the launch of a space shuttle from Cape Canaveral in Florida in the summer of 1983. An incredibly moving experience. Sadly, that negative has long been lost.
Landscapes and the natural world have always been my preferred photographic subjects. I appreciate and enjoy the steel and glass architecture of a modern city as much as I do the charm and character of historic buildings. I love mountain scenery, rivers, lakes, canyons, waterfalls, and the colour of the countryside through the seasons. Wildlife, too, is a more specialised field and presents many challenges, but can be greatly rewarding when successfully captured through the lens, sometimes more by good luck than judgement.
Having spent most of my life in the UK, I have recently settled in New Zealand, where I run a luxury guest lodge in spectacular surroundings near Kaikoura, on the beautiful South Island.
Thanks for finding and browsing my work. I have had the good fortune to have been published in a number of newspapers, travel guides, and many travel websites around the world. If you like what you see, please visit my own website, www.imagesabound.com where you will find details of the photography workshops and tours that I operate here in New Zealand, and where I keep a gallery of special fine art prints for purchase.
