This is a photograph of my surfboard in the snow at Lawrencetown beach, Nova Scotia taken 20th February 2010. Through the gap in the rocks, other surfers can be seen paddling through the near frozen sea to catch their next great ride. It’s hard to get in and out of your wetsuit when it get’s this cold, but it’s equally difficult to wait with your camera for a great shot to emerge to make it all worth it.

This stark image of the rugged coast line reminds us of just how harsh life can be in this area. Love the contrast of the snowboard, as if it’s waiting for a change in the weather…Jules

I had to get this shot quickly as I had just paddled in and my hands were just a little numb!

Great effort in difficult conditions. I know exactly what you mean. If conditions were like this everywhere, then 99% of the surfers in the world wouldn’t ever have started to surf.

  • It’s not for the feint hearted that’s for sure, but it get’s easier with modern wetsuit material, heated wetsuits etc
