Today marks a special anniversary of sorts! It’s 18 years since I purchased “Jay” aka the Jaybird aka A.J. Galante.
I bought him for $300 over the phone from some breeders in Hollister,CA who were getting out of the business. My plan was to start him myself and see what I could do with a horse from start to finish.(I had started many other horses for other people but they always moved or were sold before I could see a finished product.)
Ironically my mindset at that point was if he was crazy or unfit I would sell him in a months time!
SO that began the story of a relationship between a gangly 17 month old Arab gelding and a gawky 15 yr. old girl.
In 18 years we have competed in Halter,Showmanship,Western Pleasure,Huntseat Pleasure, Team Penning,Barrels,Extreme Equestrian Race and Competitive Trail Riding. He was also the mascot for my highschool my senior year which involved he and I riding at the football rallies. We have “trained” for Roping,Reining,Dressage and Hunter Over Fences. We have ridden miles upon miles of trails and parades, pushed cattle and ran on the beach. He has seen numerous boarding stables, boyfriends and lesson students and has been apart of my own boy’s childhoods.
Together we have worked hard and in most cases succeeded in proving that Arabs can do anything and have changed the biased mind sets of several Quarter Horse people!
I dedicate this journal entry to the best friend a girl could have!
