Biting Jumping Spider - Opisthoncus mordax (about to Jump) by

Found this Biting Jumping Spider – Opisthoncus mordax, in my backyard garden at Emerald Beach, NSW, Australia. As it didn’t seem to be going anywhere I set the camera up on a tripod and he became very interested and proceeded to jump into the lens each time I moved in for focus. So I kept putting him back where he was and he kept jumping on the camera! So I jacked up the ISO with the hope that I might get a jump image, given it was late afternoon the light was low and I wasn’t fast enough. In this shot he is sending out a “jump” line prior to launch!

Great shot, sounds like you had a good time shooting a spider who wanted to bite you!!

  • Thanks katmatt, Jumpers don’t usually bite but this on is actually called a Biting Jumping Spider" so I was a little cautious!!

I have lost count of the number of Jumping Spiders that have landed on my lens, or elsewhere on the camera, or on me :) They are my favourite spiders … well caught !

  • Thanks Trish, they are funny creatures. I love the way they turn their head to give you a good looking at before deciding to become better acquainted, I don’t mind them jumping on the lens, its when they jump on your nose that’s a little unsettling hey?
