Jumper Ant, Jumping Jack - Myrmecia nigrocincta

Artist's Description

This Jumping Ant, Myrmecia nigrocincta was just walking on by while I was shooting some fungi.Bull ants are large with long, straight, powerful jaws and a potent venom-loaded sting. Usually the sight of large aggressive ants streaming out of the nest is enough to prompt a hasty retreat. If not, the ants deliver painful stings by gripping the intruder with their mandibles (jaws), curling their abdomen to reveal the sting and injecting the victim with venom. Often multiple stings are delivered.

I moved on quickly as even though this guy didn’t notice me I knew he’d have mates nearby, and besides the leeches had already moved into my boots!! Small Rainforest – Woologoolga, NSW, Australia
