Dwarf Crowned Snake (Cacophis krefftii) by

These small elapid snakes are venomous but not considered dangerous to humans. All crowned snakes are reluctant biters, relying more on bluff display than bite. They are weakly venomous and have tiny mouths and short fangs. They will generally rear up & ‘mock strike’ with mouth closed, more of a ‘head butt’. Average Length is only 25cm. Individuals have been measured up to 35cm.

    superb capture, Cheers, Steve

  • Thanks Steve, these guys remind me of the little Red-naped Snakes (Furina diadema)I used to find around sydney as a kid (great for scaring girls in the playgound)and they are very cute with their bluffing stance. I hav’t seen the Furina for a long time! Do you get them down your way!!

This is spooky, but cool! How close were you for this shot?

  • I have to admit that I was probably only about 8 inches from the snake when I took this as the closeness was the catalyst for it to rear up in its (bluffing??) tough threatening stance (kinda cute hey). I wasn’t really being brave as these are very little snakes and usually reluctant to bite! Thanks for your comment!
