Blue Buttons (Porpita porpita) by

This is a Blue Button jellyfish washed up on Emerald Beach. Blue Buttons are not true jellyfish, but are Chondrophores. These are actually colonies of polyps. In other words, they are like a tiny colony of animals. Each animal contributes something different to the colony. Some form the central disk, while others form the tentacles. Blue buttons exist in colonies, and mass beachings frequently occur since they are at the mercy of the wind and water currents.

Very beautiful image, so artful! Interesting information too. Does it die when it is washed up like this or does it live another day to return to the water?

  • THANKS jean, alas this "buttons was past saving but I have seen many more washed back out to sea to continue thier journey!
