Little Red Riding Hood (Argyrodes miniaceus) by

Found these guys in the web of a Golden Orb Weaver (Nephila plumipes). At first I thought they may have been males (which are considerably smaller than the large female owner of the web) but eventually found a male still trying to court the female (see photo below). It turns out that these “dewdrop” spiders, with the abdomen a sharp peak and the tendency of the larger legs to be pointed forwards when the spider is at rest, is characteristic of Argyrodes species, including this one. It is also normal for this kind of spider to scavenge on the edge of the webs of large orb-weaving spider species (as these were).

    Excellent macro, Norm

  • Thanks mate, these were tiny little guys. I was tempted to use f18 to get all the detail but like the shallow DOF.

Yes, the contrast of the bright red abdomen on the olive background is stunning…

  • I thought these bright colors were reserved for crab spiders. These looked reall cool (in a hot kinda way lol!)

brilliant shot, love the colours on this unusual spider, will definitely look out for some around the garden. Thanks for the informative description, and congratulations on the feature.

  • Thanks valandsnake. I actually walked into this web while looking for Fungi. I’m glad I stopped to shoot!

Very interesting behavior these little guys have! A very gorgeous capture as well!! Never seen one of these before now. : )

  • Thank you so much Jennifer. These guys are very tiny so could be easy to miss with a BIG golden Orb in the centre of the web! I’ve only noticed them in “bush” webs not in the garden. But I suppose they could be anywhere thay can “scavange”
