Brown Huntsman Spider, Isopeda vasta?
This large female Huntsman spider (probably Isopeda vasta or Heteropoda jugulans) aged me by 10 years when it ran up my arm, neck and head, while I was rummaging through my shed, before I brushed it off. I quickly covered it in a plastic container, waited for it to calm down before lifting the lid and sneaking in for a close macro. Low and behold the bloody thing ran up my camera, arm and head again as soon as the shutter went off. I’m lucky to still have the camera in one peace!!!
Where’s a wasp when you need one????
PS No spiders were harmed in the taking of this shot!

I think I would have run a mile , I don’t think I am sure , what an evil looking spider it is . Are they deadly?
Normf replied
No Irene I don’t believe they are deadly and rarely bite BUT they are big, they have huge fangs, they are spiders (I think they can inflict a very painful bite)!! Thanks for your comment (it did take a while to calm down and I think I may have said some load words that my grandson would NOT approve of!)
morfland

We all make sacrifices Norm… but these critters really get the heart going eh? We’ll have to call you Indiana Norm.

hahahaha Norm that’s hilarious, thanks so much for the story! My camera definately would not have survived the encounter. I don’t mind spiders, but I don’t like big ones on me so good on you for composing yourself enough to take this pic – they’re such groovy looking critters up close!
Normf replied
Yeah they are cool and every one has a “Huntsman” story! Why is that?
Steve Bullock
Awesome Norm!
Normf replied
Thanks Steve. I bet you’ve got a shot of a big Selenocosmia crassipes or stirlingi running up your leg with the country you get into (actually no one could take a photo with one running up their leg could they?)
Andrea Searle
Excellent shot! I am glad it didn’t get harmed, they’re quite beautiful and intelligent creatures if you take the time to look.
Normf replied
Andrea I WAS trying to take the time to look but bugger they freak you out when they bolt up your arm!!!! lol

Duncan Waldron
Isopeda vasta? Isopeda bloody huge! Wonder what it’s like to have so many eyes. Thanks for this one… you’re a trooper :)
Normf replied
I bet you’ve had a similar experience with these “Isopeda bloody huge a’s” Duncan. Thanks
Duncan Waldron
Sorry to disappoint, but nothing so dramatic or unsettling :) Don’t shoot much wildlife, especially this sort!
