Look to the east on a summer’s eve, and you’ll see four stars outlining a large rectangle. This is the great square of PEGASUS , named for the most magnificent of mythical beasts: a horse made of air, earth, water, and fire.

A snow white stallion with wings, Pegasus originally belonged to the muses, the nine sister goddesses of the arts. He sprang to life from sea foam that was spattered with the blood of the dead Medusa.

Prince Bellerophon was the only man ever to ride Pegasus. He was obsessed with the winged steed and determined to ride him, but Pegasus was so wary, fast, and spirited that Bellerophon could never come close. Athena gave him a golden bridle with which to capture the winged horse, and the next time Pegasus glided to the earth, he allowed Bellerophon to approach and eagerly accepted the bridle. They had many glorious adventures together.

The God Zeus loved Pegasus, and entrusted him with carrying his thunderbolts. At the end of his life, instead of dying, Pegasus galloped into the heavens where we can still find him on summer nights.
