In another photo called ‘Lone farmer’ you can see a gravel road leading into a river. That was my last stop on wheels, as the river had totally wiped out the road. There was a suspension walk bridge nearby that my guide and I used to keep going. However, we were stopped at the far end by a local police officer who made an attempt to charge us (well, Me really) to cross over. It was at this point I came to realise that in Viet Nam, an ‘official’ guide has an impressive amount of influence! After taking the ‘officer’ aside for a little chat, we were on our way again with many smiles and waving from that officer and his buddies.

Two hours later we entered this small village and met this wonderful & incredibly shy local (I think she was Black Hmong, but I may be wrong as there are at least 17 different Hill tribes and many with subdivisions). It was at this stage I turned the camera off. Why? The wonderful people of this village were so so shy and so poor it just felt wrong to continue photographing. I ended up having tea in a locals’ home and of course many other villagers showed up to sell their wares. I really did enjoy spending my money that day!

Despite the unfortunate ‘white-out’ from the clouds, this still remains one of my favourites and one of my fondest memories. This photograph was taken to the West of Sa Pa in northern Viet Nam.
