The exact number of landmines is unknown. However, it is estimated that approximately 70 million landmines and other unexploded ordnance (UXO) are buried in more than 80 countries worldwide. It is estimated that there are between 15,000 and 20,000 new casualties caused by landmines and unexploded ordnance each year.
