Broken Heart Theory (After Banksy)

So seeing as i get the Banksy thing a bit on here, i figure why the hell not appropriate his ‘Broken Window Theory’ image. And cause i feel this way right now…hey at least i’m still making art!

FYI…
This is based on an article titled Broken Windows by James Q. Wilson and George L. Kelling, which appeared in the March 1982 edition of The Atlantic Monthly.[1] The title comes from the following example:

“Consider a building with a few broken windows. If the windows are not repaired, the tendency is for vandals to break a few more windows. Eventually, they may even break into the building, and if it’s unoccupied, perhaps become squatters or light fires inside.

(Thanks to wikipedia for the text)

This is good, but it isn’t better than the original, in fact it comes from the same prophecy does it not?
The Banksy tag is a tricky one, I think people call ‘Banksy’ unnecessarily sometimes, at any political stencil. Well he wasn’t he first and he won’t be the last, he just became famous, there were plenty of other stencil nutters in Bristol and London doing similar things. If one wishes to make some social commentary and uses stencils, or stencil styled art as their medium, and injects some humour, then go for it. Fair game. Using Banksy’s actual stencils and underlying inspirations to spread the same message is another matter, whether it is ‘theft’ or ‘copyright’ or whatever doesn’t matter, it’s just ‘not on’. One should always be able to use elements (all art is theft blah blah) but to create something fresh and new, that’s evolution. Not something that basically achieves the same message.
It’s odd, because you have an awful lot of very powerful stuff in your portfolio that has no resemblance to Banksy at all.
Anyway, who the fuck am I.

Shit Lucan…when i saw this i thought it was kathleen. Are you bored.

    1) I never claimed that it was, or thought it would be better that the original. i just made the connection that when giving yourself in relationships…and they don’t work you end up feeling like people just keep taking advantage of you. Yes, i was feeling sorry for myself!

2)Banksy tag is here cause half the image is essentially his. And if i didnt say it someone else would! And i like appropriation.

    3) I know he wasnt the first…or last! Well there is a chance he will be the last because he made the stencil thing a fad…but hey i guess that is like saying painting is dead. Claiming him as the first is like the difference between starting and popularising a movement. There have been political stencils here in Melb since the late seventies…few and far between. Even when i was in art school back in the early 90’s i think the first person i saw doing them way before i ever heard of banksy was Stuart Crumpler….of the Crumpler Bags fame. Not that they were saying much…kinda more like a branding campaign like the obey one.

    4) Heart…coming out of chest of tee = humour = fair game! I see it as a different message, common theme. But that is where art can have different interpretations. But each to their own.

5)Thanks for looking at my folio! And yeah i like to think i have some powerful images in there. I just happen to be influenced by Banksy every now and then…when its warhol no one says boo on here…but hey what can you do. Sometimes it feels like people only make the connection and the comment about who the influence is to feel part of the ‘in the know’ crowd. Its usually… not always, saying more about them than it is a tear down of your own work…but thats my opinion…and who the fuck am i.

Golly what a response, you’re not in a happy state of mind are you.
I wasn’t really having a go, I was just remarking in a generic kind of way about the subject as a whole. I certainly wasn’t attempting to ‘tear down your work’. It was a conversation really. And where is this ‘in the know’ crowd? It sounds intriguing, I’ve been photographing Banksy’s for ten years, now he’s as well publicised as Brad Pitt, I think it’s the ‘most of the known world’ crowd.
You’re right that people saying ‘Oh, Warhol influence’ carries less stigma. But I think people say that whenever one repeats an image, or has bright pop art colours. But his influence on art in general is rather more profound. I think if one took whole elements of his work and reused them people would still call ‘thief’ or somesuch.

But oh for the lovely Michelle Boyer to throw that comment in, how sorry the world would be without the Michelle Boyer’s. Brought a smile to my face and tear to my eye.
I am rather bored yes, there is absolutely bugger all of any worth happening on the site at the moment.

You may find this amusing, after everything else

Cheers Lucan…yeah im a moody biatch right now! I wasn’t refering to you in the tear down comment or the ‘in the know’ crowd btw. I was just saying how people like to show their knowledge prowess of art and artists…which is funny here as this really is argueably low brow art. Yes Banksy is certainly not obscure any more…funny the connection you made between him and brad pitt, cause he(if my gossip magazine knowledge is up to date) is a prowd owner of a few banksy artworks with his partner…you know the one with the lips. As for Warhol…who knows the impact of street art on the future of art as we know it…if it makes a dint, then i guess when historians look back Banksy could end up being the next Warhol so to speak. Digressing from Warhol a little…i don’t think Duchamp would ever be considered a thief…and he did very little to some objects or artworks made by others…but hey…hes not here flogging tshirts! And yes in reference to Michelle…made me smile too. Its kinda like knowing when your out on the town on a bender, some are going to drunkenly hug you and tell you they love you while others are likely to spit in your face and have a go. Got love em all, cause you ain’t got no choice…and they make the world an interesting place! As for nothing happening here…if we all blame danny it might bring him out of the woodwork. i guess while its quiet you could always make some art! ;)
Anyway…yes…that link was amusing…but now im afraid i must go and bid on a brick wall on ebay…from all my ebay sales of direct Banksy copies! HAHA!!! (I wish…kinda…not…um…yeah?)

Yeah…thats our mission…but i think its mainly just me right now being grumpy. I accept the blame! And Lucan just misses arguing with sjem…cause sjem isnt allowed out to play…think sjem got grounded like danny. Maybe they did something naughty together.

    With pain comes inspiration
    Beautiful piece
I think Scott said ages ago (in a Lucan post somewhere)
It is unfair to label something Bankyish if it vaguely resembles something he did
    This stands alone
    Fine work Glen (as usual)
I find your work , like Scott and Lucan – totally original

  • nofrillsart

    nofrillsart

Yes…but unfortunately with pain come pain damn it! Although i think i might have a few heart art things to do soon. So keep an eye out. Thanks for the support Danny…it was probably just me feeling life a bit too much…and Lucan was bored! ;)
