Riders on the Storm

Riders on the Storm

Monsoon just minutes after passing by and heading up into Oak Creek Canyon, Sedona, Arizona! This storm was producing marble size hail with strong wind and rain. It was very dark and I thought the storm would not let up until after sundown. I was surprised by how fast the storm passed & just as the sun was setting. I did have my camera out trying to capture lightning but visibility was horrible so I had already put the camera/tripod away. I was totally taken off guard by this beautiful sight from my balcony and was unable to set the camera back up in time to capture the rainbows at their brightest! However, I’m very pleased with this shot…it is my personal favorite-to-date! It is so ironic that all the hiking and driving I do to different locations, I captured this one on the balcony of my apartment.

    Very awesome Brent!! Wonderful colors!!!!!

  • Brent Monger replied

Thanks but I didn’t set up the camera in time to catch the rainbow at its brightest! It all happened so fast. like five minutes before it was soooooooo dark with hail/rain outside. I wasn’t even going to bother with the camera but then the storm started to pass as the sun was setting.

brilliant image. Having camera at right time and looking for light is all about photography and being able to capture the perfect image is the skill. Here you have recorded perfectly a time and place that is not likely to be repeated. Well done.

  • Brent Monger replied

Thanks Anne!! Well…I should say that…double rainbows at this location happen more often than one would think. This was the third occasion that I had witnessed it just this year and It only happens during monsoon season. However, this was the most dramatic of any storm I had seen at this location before! I was still at the right place at the right time.

My goodness, Brent … this is … absolutely extraordinary!!!!!! I’m just in “WOW” over this beauty!!!! I loved reading your note on the background of taking this one. Always love hearing about the trials and tribulations of the photographing of an image … and I had to laugh at your last bit … all the hiking and traveling … and here’s your favorite shot … taken from the balcony of your own apartment!!! Toooo funny!!! But ain’t life grand???? Honestly, this image could be a metaphor for life … for good and evil … we could go so many different ways with the split in color and texture and activity … to the left goodness and warmth, rainbows, to the right cold fear, icy clouds looking to crush whatever is unlucky enough to be in their path!!! I’ll stop there, lol!!! Congratulations to you on your Feature in Mountains and Light!!!!!! Best regards …

  • Brent Monger replied

Thank you Lois!!! Another one of my shots, although a planned one, has a lot of symbolic meaning to me but it hasn’t gotten much attention so far. Check it out “Let Go.”

Congratulations! This excellent photo was Featured by Mornings & Evenings, Sunbeams & Storms starting 27 Dec 2008!
There are all sorts of “dividing” examples in the Bible, and in the modern revelation. Dividing the wheat from the chaff; “As far as the East is from the West,” (Psalm 113, I think,) the light from the darkness, the seas from the land… and this is Zion. The national park people didn’t name it that. Another beautiful red place to go is to VALLEY OF FIRE State Park, outside of Las Vegas, NV. Don’t go between March and September. (Thunderstorms in Sept make the place dangerous for humans, and flash floods are pretty hard on cars…)

  • Brent Monger replied

Thanks Dayonda!!! Actually, thunderstorms and flash floods are my favorite times to be out taking photos!!! You must have respect for Mother Nature and be aware of your surroundings when you do this. I tend to stay away from narrow canyons and low areas while doing this. One can get into trouble very fast if not aware!!
