Everyday Life, Imperfectly and New Zealand Made

I’m lying face down on a white sheet in a room that smells of organic healing; sweet floral essences undercut with a deep, earthy pungency that I can’t place. The cotton under my body is high quality and slightly rough against my cheek. Now that I’m lying down I can’t help wishing I’d felt self-conscious enough to keep the towel around my waist; something about being naked in front of a near-stranger has made my inner thighs just a little slippery.

He has such small hands for a man, smooth with clipped, clean nails (I checked). The skin is fine with the delicate, translucent quality of a macrobiotic vegan and there’s tell-tale yellow staining on the index and middle fingers.

As he begins his work with long, strong strokes along my back and flanks, I’m amazed by the strength in those fingers, the deftness, the nuances of contact. The tenderness of the touch is offset by a clinical methodology that reassures me of how well he knows what he’s doing. I close my eyes and let everything go, surrender to the rhythm of kneading and squeezing, the pressure soothing and the pain refreshing in its honesty. I melt into a warm, messy mental fuzziness. This is delicious. There are words jumbling through my befuddled skull that mean nothing to me; siramatrika, ansa phalak, kukundaraya, it’s all beyond me. What’s a marma? I haven’t the foggiest but whatever he’s doing to them, it’s goddamn working.

There’s something distinctly unprofessional about your touch I think to him. It’s true, and I’m loving it. I came here to be touched in a healing capacity, without intimacy, but to my surprise I’m finding it’s hard to restrain myself from sighing with a different sort of enjoyment. There’s such kindness in the motion of his hands. I feel tuned like a fine instrument. I’m refreshed.

Well done – you’ve captured the ambiguity of therapeutic touch…so much is conveyed and experienced without a word being spoken. I practiced (and received) massage therapy for many years. It’s interesting to hear it from this perspective. :)
