I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am dependent on my images as my future source of income…......I cannot take the risk of loosing my copyrights due to the signing of the Orphan Works Act of 2008….if you haven’t heard about it ,go to crockpot’s pages and check it out…..........it is a frightening prospect and on the verge of becoming a reality…....I have (almost) decided to remove all of my works from the internet until I can decide to, or afford to register them (if this bill gets passed)....I signed the petition, and registered my negative vote for this horrendous bill…....please follow the links on crockpot’s pages and do the same! I cannot even imagine such a thing happening, but it sure looks like it will…........I urge you all to oppose this now!!! If this bill is passed, it will hurt all of us.

Joyce Dickens,... in reply to Aphoto4You IPA’s comment, 2 months ago
Yes Bianca…it is really sad; I guess we will have to do it the “old fashion” way….....I am very upset about this!

what about the website helen has on her profile page that will copyright all material for free before the bill is signed? won’t that protect us?
Henk Stolk, 2 months ago
Even I am in NZ, I signed the petition.
Strange thing… It appears to me like, what you see in these violent movies where gang members charge people for looking after their car. if you don’t pay, you car get stolen.
Same here, but the gang members are the government. If you don’t pay for them looking after your photos, they get stolen.
Strange world…. not funny

Joyce websites like RB would have to set up different way of doing it…file format that will not be able to be printed or saved….and keep original file on a server…and when buyer pays for it ….they get file…as it is right now….resolution of many files here CAN NOT BE used for large prints if someone saves the work…it would be low quality…so RB would have to use even smaller yet to protect…us

and the governament is greedy they wann hand in out pockets,,,it shouldnt be copyright on each piece…should be any sign art with name JOYCE DICKENS should be protected and one flat fee charged….
Joyce Dickens,... in reply to Aphoto4You IPA’s comment, 2 months ago
Bianca, that is what Shutterpoint does, which I am also a member there, though I removed all but about 10 images…....I didn’t like the politics there, it is not a free site either…...but that is something that redbubble could look into….I know this has been addressed in the past…..
Joyce Dickens,... in reply to Aphoto4You IPA’s comment, 2 months ago
Now we have the option of paying the flat fee of $45, but if I understand the bill correctly that work would not be safe under the new law….........
Aphoto4You IPA, 2 months ago
Oh no SUCKERPOINT…lol i left there long time ago..i used to buy big time photography there from different people…i left didnt like their way of doing business with people…its a great world when we have choice…lol…I hope that this will be regulated to protect artists and not just to put money into governament hands…sorry my writting i am sitting at the show and typing this hald dead…16 hours in my booth…real tired…

Have you made it so that the watermark is on your images in the middle?
I try to make ANYTHING that I try to sell on the web watermarked so that nobody can steal it like “right click” or screen capture. I know that this is a STUPID law but right now people steal it anyway. I have found several of my pictures (I do a silly lego not for sale fun thing) and it was stolen and sent around myspace. SO things get stolen all the time. I can’t image what is going to happen.
Joyce Dickens,... in reply to Micki Ferguson’s comment, 2 months ago
That is another alternative Micki; one which I will have to consider I think, thanks!

yes, I have ALL my work where I can sell it to my clients that I do my shoots for. (you can see the link on my front page). There where I have the option to upload the pictures I can filter my stuff with a WONDERFUL way of putting copyright right on them that do not comprimise the image AND I can put anything I want over the image to do this. I don’t have to worry about the image at all as I have had to make no step on the picture myself but to upload it. I do things like retirements and events and upload LOTS of pictures. When doing things like the HOCKEY pictures I can upload a thousand pictures in a week and I do NOT have time to do anything but upload the pictures and then with a FLIP I can get them copyrighted. :)
Also another key is the company PREVENTS them from being RIGHT CLICK savable (yeah). Of course I can make them downloadable to anyone if I want them to (right click able). I am not trying to SELL for this company as there are MANY other company’s out there but this one works well for me. Redbubble for me is a place to show my art and find friends and mentors and talk with others. As for selling my stuff, personally I think getting out there into the real world and BRINGING people here to your “web” would sell your stuff the best way. Until Redbubble is out there promoting themselves as a company with artwork to sell in the real world people won’t know there is art to buy. Understand?
Ok, I have said alot so if you have any more questions just e-mail me :) I have a BIG BIG BIG heart for all this art on here and wish I could purchase EVERYTHING!!!! :)

That’s worth a shot of course, but it won’t be enough if the bill is passed. To date, there doesn’t seem to be any information that will restrict the number of registries allowed to open in the private sector. Even if there are only 2 registries in every state in the US that’s 104 registries… The bill says the person using the image has to make a reasonable search for the images owner in these registries, but what is “reasonable”? If they are required to search only 10 registries and you don’t happen to have your images registered at those 10, then what? Artists would need to register at every registry. If every registry charges $1 per image X the number of registries the costs would be more than burdensome, they’d be impossible for most people. At the moment, I have 500 images prepared to register, but if I had to do it at $1/image (which is an unlikely amount, it will probably be more) that would be $500 times the number of registries. I have 3,000 posted on a free site that would also need to be registered, as well as those I have on stock sites (over 500 in total). I don’t know about anyone else, but I’d be out of business pretty quick.
And what about those of us who have already paid registry fees? (I registered some early on when I started stock, but based on our copyright laws it seemed a waste of money, and apparently it still will have been a waste of money.) I suspect we’d be required to do it all over again at every registry, but this time instead of a disc of images, you’d be required to register every image individually.
And I’m sorry to say that even a watermark in the middle of your image won’t mean much – anyone whose any good with photoshop can remove that with a little work. It will prevent casual absconders who don’t know anything about editing from stealing your copyright, but it won’t stop someone who really wants your picture to sell themselves.
The entire thing could be an enormous nightmare; not just for the artists, but for every site that hosts artists works. Many are going to pull out wholesale leaving a lot of empty profiles, and sites will have little to sell.

joyce dont remove anything just yet, but where is this petition? im wanting to sign it, but i cant find anywhere..this is total BS, i wish the gov would worry more about the high gas prices, the food costs, getting RID of illegal immigrants, and a real crazy concept…allow insurance for it’s citizens!
Joyce Dickens,... in reply to Christopher Ewing’s comment, 2 months ago
Chris, I agree…did you find it? I’m not sure where I found it; I was on the internet all afternoon yesterday checking and such….found it through the links at crockppot’s page and I understand that there are several links at Helen Bascom’s page….this cannot be happening!
Joyce Dickens,... in reply to Micki Ferguson’s comment, 2 months ago
Micki…I checked out that other site where your work is also posted….I like that idea of not being able to rightclick…...only $40 a year for unlimited space…...not bad at all; I may give that a whirl….I am still going to remove most of my images here I think and reload them with my watermark…...that has always been an option but just didn’t want to have to do that…....I guess we are all being pushed in a corner….....thank you so much for your very valuable information…...I had checked into that site way back when and I’m not sure why I didn’t go with them as well….can’t have too many you know :-) hugs!
Joyce Dickens,... in reply to Aphoto4You IPA’s comment, 2 months ago
Bianca, you must be exhausted!! I have decided to start over…remove work and reload select images with a watermark…..and also going to check out the site that Micki Ferguson was mentioning….it sounds pretty good also…...big hugs, take care my friend!
