This is the Rift Valley Trail in Taos, NM, on the East rim of the Rio Grande Rift. This is a mountain biking trail that winds through 9 miles of sage and pine, taking you right to the edge of the rift itself. You can’t tell from this image, but the trail rises and falls over a 600 foot elevation as it nears the rift and crosses several draws (stream beds) that lead to the rift. Here you can see a single-track trail leading to the left, and a two-track going straight-ahead. The trail was recently completed by the BLM along with another trail on the West rim of the rift.
On a hot summer afternoon, the rain storm was a welcome relief.
Best seen large.. the sign in the foreground clearly says “Rift Valley Trail”, by the way.
