The Rio Grande River starts near Leadville Colorado and makes its way all the way to Mexico. This scene is captured north of Taos, New Mexico not too far from the Colorado border, up on the Colorado Plateau, looking North towards Colorado. The river runs through a system of Rifts, the most spectacular part of which starts right here and heads south for over 100 miles.

Just down from the west rim of the rift, from where this picture is taken, you can find natural hot springs fed by the same volcanic forces that created the spectacular landscape of this area. This is on the rift-side hiking trail that weaves down to those springs.

Canon 5D MK II, Tamron 28-300 VC at 28mm, 3 images AEB +/-2, f/14 1/500, f/20 1/1000, f/10 1/250, ISO400 tripod mount, processed in Aperture/Photomatix plugin.
