Limestone quarries can be found all over Florida, particularly in South Florida. This quarry is near the Homestead Miami Speedway on SW 344th Street (Homestead SE 24th Street) west of 145 Ave.
The unnatural color of the water is caused by lime dust and other particulates that stay in suspension in an active quarry (they’re always filled with water because of our shallow water tables). You can see the dredging rigs in this shot.
To capture the vidid and unusual blue of the water, I took three exposures and worked on them in Photomatix and Aperture.
Taken with a Canon 5D using a Tamron 28-300 VC lens.
