We found this camper van stranded in the middle of the Khwai River in Botswana. Yes, there are crocodiles in that river and yes, we had seen a pride of lion within 150 meters of this spot earlier that day.
The van had been hired a day earlier in Maun, Botswana by a couple on the honeymoon. Their dream was to do a “self-drive” tour of the Okavango Delta.
The van was 4X4 so the couple assumed they were good for all types of tracks, even those that crossed rivers, like this one.
The reality is much different. The water flow often gouges out the track in the middle of the river so the safest crossing is often (not always) a U-curve, heading downstream first, cross then upstream again.
Of course, THE safest way to go is with an experienced driver.
In this case, the driver added huge risk to his first African experience by walking through the bush on a moonless night to flag us down.
