While we were in Botswana, the smoke from hundreds of fires in Namibia was drifting across Southern Africa. Hanging low in the sky, the smoke would obliterate the sun before it reached the horizon.

What a fabulous capture, but sad to hear that at the cost of wildfire damage.
Hmmm. Nearly all of those fires are started by people. As in Australia, there is an ongoing debate about about the benefits of regular burning (which happens in the natural state) vs “protecting” the Veld from fire. Indeed, the Etosha National Park (gazetted in 1907) now proscribes an annual burning program where a different part of the Park is burned every year to simulate the natural cycle of biomass buildup and lightning-started fires to reduce it. On top of the managed programs, there are also many ostensibly illegal fires lit by the traditional land-carers. Relatively few fires are lit by poachers, but it does happen.

Brings back memories, wish I was there.. How did you capture the colour though? I tried everything with my sunset/sunrise shots but just couldn’t get it!
Best I can offer is that I was lucky. The sun had almost set and the smoke was really thick. What was really interesting was that the smoke was so thick the sun actually disappeared before it reached the horizon. You can just see that starting to happen at the bottom of the sun in this image.
