Original Artwork by Nina Smart. 2009
Acrylic Paint on unprimed canvas. 18″ × 10″
“One day, not that long ago, she appeared out of the raw canvas and she was very welcome!”
Following on from my watercolor series “Face Navigation” where over a hundred small scale portraits became an expression of the relativity between movement, time and emotion, “Raw” was my first successful attempt to shift into larger scale artworks but with acrylic paints on canvas. Previous to this I hadn’t worked in acrylics in any way, shape or form so learning to use this new medium proved to be very time consuming and extremely frustrating at times. I had such a clear vision of what I wanted to paint but absolutely no understanding of how different acrylic paint is to use in comparison with watercolors or even oils!
Oh how it is to be out of one’s comfort zone?! This painting validated 12 months of work in acrylic paints that failed to produce anything like what I was aiming for. Nina Smart

Powerful treatment. Well done.
I LOVE when that happens :) Beautiful Nina – great red lipstick.
Beautiful
i love the artwork dont understand the title…….
“Raw” refers to the painting being on raw canvas rather than primed and that this isn’t really a “finished” painting. I’m only just learning the craft of acrylic painting after using watercolour and oils for many years so I feel I’m on a steep learning curve with this medium.
