Beautifully done. Watercolors? Did you do this by hand, or on the computer?

Thank you for your positive feed back on LOST. All of your work – this one really caught my eye and imagination – is wonderful. Great watercolour technique, wish my stuff was as fresh. I tend to use a 19th century watercolourist’s approach, deny the medium its natural spontaneity and pretend that it’s not a poor man’s oils. Even Turner over used body colour at times. The one 19th century thing I won’t do however, is to use Chinese White. All my highlights are lack of pigment; the paper speaks for itself. I glaze and glaze and glaze…publishers hate me I’m sure…a six month commission takes me twelve and a twelve month job, 18 months…the results I feel though are worth the labour.

More strength to your sable, Nina. (I’ve gone over to synthetic myself, sable ain’t what it was and, like all artists, I’m not fat from royalties or sales; sables are toooooo expensive.)

Hi Rory, Its alway great to meet another childrens book illustrator. I hear what your saying about deadlines. I’m due to finish a book in February, the entire project would have taken me 3 and a half years to complete. Is it worth it? Hummmm! The illustrator in me says ‘Yes’ however, the person trying to make ends meet is hoping the book will sell well. It’s a mad career choice.
