A family portrait of my grandmother as a child with her family.

They all look so sad here…I could not resist drawing what I saw in the photo…disconnect…My grandmother had a very long and unhappy childhood…she is 68 years old now.

As a child my grandmother grew up in one of the richest families in Puerto Rico. Her father was a well known and respected chef in Puerto Rico. He had all his children’s clothes handmade and their toys handmade as well. This was in the 40’s…but despite it all, the family decided to come to new york city…things went sour from that moment and they seemed to have fell from grace…

Media Used: collage, found materials, acrylic, pastels, charcoal, oil pastels, gouache, various media on bristol paper 14 × 17
