The Crested Carcara is a ground-inhabiting bird of prey that is closely related to Falcons. It’s found primarily in open habitats like grasslands, scrub deserts and seashores.Crested Caracara populations have been declining due to loss of habitat due to development for some time. The Audubon’s Crested Caracara is listed on the U.S. Endangered Species List and the Florida populations considered a threatened. The Florida populations face uncertain futures since the majority of the land in it’s range is privately owned, and thus not under Federal protection.

Lovely shot Kathy, it’s a beautiful looking bird. Doesn’t it make you mad when habitats are taken in the name of progress. We have the same problem here with roos and koalas. They’re building an extension to the freeway near us and it’s going through roo-land. More will be killed from getting run over.

  • thanks so much Polly, it makes no sense at all

Terrific capture Kathy … I’m always sad to read how wildlife are being squeezed out in the name of progress and greed ~ there has to be a balance for when they’re gone, they’re gone!

  • thanks so much, it sure is
