Hi there! My name is Nicoll, I am a self-employed calligrapher working in Melbourne, Australia.
Born into a large extended family of artists and creative souls, my interest in all things paper and ink began early. However it wasn’t until my twenties that calligraphy lured me with its glistening black marks on white paper, and I was hooked, perhaps somewhat surprisingly for a left-hander.
Over the years I have studied with many talented calligraphers, going on to build a career as a lettering tutor and professional scribe within the corporate sector in both Melbourne and abroad.
However my passion lies with lettering art, with exploring the amazing possibilities offered by the 26 letters of the alphabet; the ways they can be mixed to create a myriad of different meanings representing the soul’s most intimate expression, and integrating visually with many different techniques and art forms.
Ink records the author’s words, but for the calligrapher, it also records their passion.
Each letter I write is like a fingerprint – unique to me, and betraying my emotions, usually evoked by the words. No-one else will write a letter just the same way as I do, and that is the beauty of hand lettering; no computer will ever be able to add passion to its output.
The most exciting thing for me now is that this is just the beginning of my journey…
