Poem: Descansos

descansos

I have carried you too far
Troubled too much
Rested too little

I have passed over miles with you, as thick shadow,
Perched all the while like a dark scavenger of angels
Unable to shake you off or to coax a reluctant departure

As the age of understanding draws a small bit of wisdom upon me
I will no longer resist your inclinations to appear when I want you the least
I’m resigned to the familiar feel and presence
I find it is almost reassuring

I have carried you too far
Troubled too much
Rested too little
All the while you sit
Shadowboxing the wall
A dream deferred
A voice within
As a reason for
As an argument against
As a pound of possibility
As an ounce of regret

My resistance razed at last
I set you down
And I will mark this place
Not as a memorial of victory or a fork-in-the-road decision
Not as a final resting place
Just a moment
Short lived
But lived
Totally
In peace
