Poem: Descansos

descansos

I have carried you too far
Troubled too much
Rested too little

I have passed over miles with you, as thick shadow,
Perched all the while like a dark scavenger of angels
Unable to shake you off or to coax a reluctant departure

As the age of understanding draws a small bit of wisdom upon me
I will no longer resist your inclinations to appear when I want you the least
I’m resigned to the familiar feel and presence
I find it is almost reassuring

I have carried you too far
Troubled too much
Rested too little
All the while you sit
Shadowboxing the wall
A dream deferred
A voice within
As a reason for
As an argument against
As a pound of possibility
As an ounce of regret

My resistance razed at last
I set you down
And I will mark this place
Not as a memorial of victory or a fork-in-the-road decision
Not as a final resting place
Just a moment
Short lived
But lived
Totally
In peace

I can’t find words to say how this touches me. The distance our heart carries our pain, it would seem easier to set it down by the side of the road, but it is not. This is a phenomenal write and I applaud the depth of soul, of heart that penned every word, especially the last stanza. From the bottom of my heart this is fantastic.

I have passed over miles with you, as thick shadow,
Perched all the while like a dark scavenger of angels
Unable to shake you off or to coax a reluctant departure
    Fantastic read, fantastic write.

  • Thank you Tony! I have searched for so long for the way to make sense of these tings. WHen I first read about Descansos, I was already familiar with them. . . but the history of them, the origin, the meaning. That got inside of me and I realized my work is just that. Markings of a place where things are laid to rest.

Thank you for taking time to comment my friend.
