really well painted again nicholas, this guy looks as if you caught him moving his head like in the shutter on a camera with his side profile still in evidence to the left side. these works of yours always make you wonder about the charachter-who is ellman in this case and why does he so complex! anyway great work again, keep them coming.
ChristineBetts
stunning.
Marie Magnusson
well, I can only agree with nasher, your figures always leaves me wanting to know the full story behind the painting, who is this person, what has he done with his life, they are remarkable portraits I think
David Kennett

Do you know of Frank Auerbach’s work? I love this image of yours. great great lovely beautiful and most important for me – interesting and expressive.
Nicholas Johnston replied 22 days ago
Alex, I do know Frank Auerbach’s work, in fact I’m hoping to get along to an exhibition of his work from the 50s at the Courtauld Institute here in London. You should check out Paul Ruiz’s “blog”: http://artcatalyst.wordpress.com/2009/02/05/remembering-auerbach/on Auerbach/ In the mean time, thank you for your comment, if I can make something that’s interesting and expressive to someone else, then that’s enormously gratifying for me.

Fabulous painting Nicholas :)
I’d imagine you’d appreciate the so-called ‘London School’ of painting, and you’ve excelled in producing such a monumental and moving paiece here – never easy to ‘see’ online’ really, but appears to be amazing from where I’m sitting :)
Nicholas Johnston replied 15 days ago
Chris thank you! To get that sort of response from another painter has just made my day.
