great misty and dreamy quality but yet so much detail conveyed in the facial expression. the little drops of dripping paint are the final touch making it absolutely exquisite
Phil Eckert
an evocative presence…... Great work !
Paul Compton
This painting has such a wonderful, evocative softness to it. Great work.
Linda Ridpath
beautiful, so much feeling in there!
Damian

mklau
Evocative, etherial and a magical artistic image… I admire your work

me likes your work….mister not artist but dubliner painter. i am glad you can hate 2 cities and love them, too….and that you decided to take up painting. my mother believed beyond a doubt that everyone is an artist yet most don’t believe it and wouldn’t be caught dead trying, god forbid they make a bad piece of art …or worse…a fool of themselves.
Janne Kearney
Great atmosphere and painting.
Nicholas Johnston
Thanks Janne, it’s a personal favourite, so I’m really pleased you like it.
Firedrake
Incredible ideas…the dark streak is so dramatic!
Nicholas Johnston
Thanks Firedrake for all your comments!
Magda Vacariu
powerful portrait. i wonder if you are familiar with louis le brocqui’s head series: http://www.anne-madden.com/LeBPages/Individual.html
Nicholas Johnston
I am indeed Magda – his work from the 60s and 70s I consider some of his most powerful work, and this early painting of mine was certainly influenced by him – at least formally.

I feel I know this person! Your title is wonderful and I have been sitting here looking at this image for a while now. I feel very happy that I am not a tourist of images; that just looks at images passing by! It makes me very happy to see your wonderful portfolio of work and to read your profile. Someone that is so very talented but does not wish to be called an artist. This makes me not only interested in the person but also in the man. Your work possesses a great source of joy, mystery and colour. Semblance #2 is a great success – thank you for sharing your exceptional work with us all! I have enjoyed looking at your work today!Sx

Thank you very much Sophie, not only for spending the time to look but also for your considered reply. I painted Semblance 2 quite a few years ago now, but I still have it on my wall and remain both satisfied with it and also tied to it. It is one of those images that’s never quite disconnected itself from me… or rather, I’ve been unable to look at it objectively in the same way I can eventually assess my other paintings. And it’s my pleasure of course to share my work. Many thanks to you!

Nicolas, this is an amazing piece…i really like how the face emerges from the background, you have created a painting that one can lose themselves in and have a different interpretation each time….Im not at all surprised that this is still on your wall!.
Josh Bowe
Great work Nicholas, superb haunting quality to this, superb handling of minimalistic qualities
catherine walker
Amazing painting ..it has a great sadness..or maybe torment is the feeling that I’m getting with this one..
astounding and wonderful art!
Anji Johnston
This is an amazing art work, so well executed. Are we related??!!!!
Nicholas Johnston
Many thanks Anji. I have to say that I don’t encounter many other Johnstons outside my family, but it’s quite a common name in Scotland and especially Edinburgh.

Thanks Deano

Yes, I know this and still like it so much. The disintegration and raw pain of it is unnerving. Well done Nick.
Kieran Sturgeon
This piece has a great ambience, of what I’m not 100% sure about, but it is just so intriguing. Great work.
Katie Young
