beach grass calligraphy

As I haven’t been able to get out for weeks with my camera, I was browsing through some old images that I thought were useless and just noticed the top of a bank of beach grass and wondered how it would look cropped and treated with a watercolour filter, so here it is.

Taken with my Nikon D700, 105mm macro lens, ISO1000 set to b&w, f/7.1, 1/250sec, +.3 step, Indian Ocean south of Hillary’s, Perth, Western Australia, cropped and given watercolour filter.

SOLD (my first ever sale) Greeting card!

this looks really asian which I love. I would love to know filter you used. I am really interested in this picture because it looks more like a painting very cool.

  • nadine henley replied

Hi eaphotography! so pleased you like this. I just cropped to get the blades of grass I liked and then put it through the filter gallery on Photoshop CS2. I stopped playing with alternatives when I got to the watercolour filter and saw it came out the way I had it in my head – as if done with a calligraphy pen..

    Well done, Nadine !!
It’s for reasons like this I don’t throw anything out. Only difference – I never get back to it. lol.

  • nadine henley replied

ah, yes, there’s a very small window between being too ill to do anything and being well enough to go out and take new photos – in which to revisit rejects! I might try to find another one or two today – feeling bit better again. So glad you liked this one, stan

I like this and your title, Nadine. Good vision to see this and crop what you deemed unnecessary. This is such a remarkable journey, eh? I’m sorry I missed seeing this earlier. I may be the delete/hide queen, but you rank right up there as the rearrange queen.

  • nadine henley replied

so pleased you like this, jan. I think it’s more just cropping than anything else but starting with an image sharp enough to take it. Thanks also for your eagle eye on the High Kep tag – a lesser-known, unconventional treatment!

hi nadine.. this image is the type I stare at.. i love the simplicity that many times eludes me .. I started out in my photographic walk looking out for this sort of thing.. and I still long to find it.. but my work has become a bit different as I could get to an audience with my simple shots:).. but this.. this is is what I would love to excell at.. a brilliant gorgeous crop of life.. I love it , as you well see.

  • nadine henley replied

what a fabulously generous comment, isa! thank you so much and for the fav – and I think two of your watchers must have spotted it and faved it too so I am triply grateful for al this attention for my lttle beach grasses!

it’s like 830am there… and 830pm here.. yes.. seeing a small praying mantis on the tip of the grass would be beautiful… nothing like adding accessories to a photo… and the sticklick feeling of the grasses will certainly go well with the stick figure of the mantis.

  • nadine henley replied

not that either of us would stoop to photo manipulation, eh? lol!
