it amazes me that nobody has commented on this image. with all the news that we read about this area and all the chaotic images that we get, it’s a photo as simple as this that can tell us all we need to know (not that i know anything much about the true situation to be quite honest, but that’s just the way people live isn’t it?).

reminded me immediately of the photo by Arko Datta what won the world press photo of the year in 2004 (man was the tsunami that long ago already?). again a simple photo that told us more about the human cost than all the statistics and newsflashes we were bombarded with.

Really striking, love the unexpected angle and the tenderness it portrays, a thought provoking and touching image. I see the person in the boot offering his help to the other – a shared moment of being ‘humane’.

maybe i`m cynical but to me this image was all about power and military strength vs someone in slippers. interesting that lisadee had a totally different take on it…

  • its all about appearance

    its all about ...

    Great tension

I tend to see the point of views of all the comments thus far. It is very easy to manipulate a reaction in terms of yes or no, good or bad, w/o seeing the whole image. Yes there is power and tension in the image, the contrast between a paratrooper shoe and a sandal calls for an immediate comparison of weak and strong, oppressed and oppressor, but sometimes when we move back and include the whole scene a different image may emerge.. and none of us know what it is. It’s a great image to open dialog and discussion but it is certainly not black and white perception. Thanks for the contribution to the Art of the Middle East group
