This photo was taken at the Dachau Concentration camp, it was the first camp opened in Germany. It was believed that over 25,000 people died during the camps duration and was one of the most grim places I have ever visited. I walked through rooms set up as gas chambers disguised as showers for the prisoners, thankfully the gas chambers were never used for their intended purpose as I think it would be a horrific way to die.
This photo presents the juxtaposition between inside and outside of the camp, the camp is surrounded by an electrified barbed-wire fence, a ditch, and a wall with seven guard towers. It was near on impossible to escape however in 1933 Hans Beimler managed to escape the grounds and wrote about his experience inside Dachau.
