I’ve had a few comments recently asking how I produce my line work. Do I go straight to paper or do I sketch in pencil first? Were do the ideas come from?
So, I thought I’d try to answer. Most if not all of the images I’ve produced on this blog over the last few months have been ink drawings in my Moleskine sketchbook. These images have mostly been straight to paper in ink without a pencil sketch. This is scary sometimes but if you get it wrong just turn the page and start again. I like to have the blank page, nothing in my head, then just begin and see what happens, the ideas seem to come from nowhere. I was intending for my Moleskine book to be just that, a book. I wanted it to look like a finished thing, and not a sketchbook of loose ideas (I have another pad and pieces of paper for that)
Of course when I’m illustrating a short story I sometimes plan a few character sketches out in another book, and often find I need to pencil sketch the position of an arm or leg for example, but that’s usually as for as it goes. For more complex compositions I turn to the computer. I will get the crux of the piece down in one pass, but often find myself redrawing a part of two again before putting it together on the computer. With vector work I trace the pen drawings in ‘DrawPlus’ Vector does allow you to cheat alot, to miss out errors and add in extra items.
