If you had put a beard and a little pot belly on the main character you would have caught me perfectly. Excellent work.

  • Dang! Knew I’d forgotten something or other there…….
    Cheers Jim :)

Oh this poor little chap. I feel so sorry for him in face of those big bullys. You have captured the feelings very well. Bullying should never be allowed.

  • Thanks Anthea – so, so right….. Sign of insecurity ;)

brilliant !! i missed this one for some reason. how do you do it ? do you start with a pencil sketch? i’m interested in the whole process of how you came to this fantastic end piece.

  • Thanks Mandy :)
Basically a compositional pencil sketch first, yes… After that’s worked out, some separate sketches to suss out the characters designs & poses, which then get redrawn across into the main composition.
Of course ten times easier in photoshop these days (and twenty times quicker with a cintiq!), but in painting in gouache (here), I’ll usually lightly ballpoint in the lines before rubbing out all the pencil underneath.
That way, a smoother, thinner wash of gouache can be put down before outlining with a brush to finish off.

Just a semi-pro Chris, fortunately, as cartooning would not feed my family ;)
    Your stuff is great!

  • Thanks Hagen :) Sadly I have found the same…. Seems the market for cartoon styles is not so ‘fashionabe’ these days. I do it for fun ;) ☺
