This is a remarkable painting, baroque in its clarity of detail and dramatic contrasts, it carries, for me, a mix of granduer and pathos. Some intriguing event has captured the small group’s attention just beyond the picture space, yet we are held and engaged by a single, expressive gaze that looks out from the heart of this gathering. There is a curiousness as to why only this one old man looks out at us, and it is this tension between his action and those of his companions that makes this painting not only a work of truly skillful representation but also one of humane, artistic intelligence.
