Sun Worshipper
This piece started life as a simple line drawing sketch (originally one of a few promotional works for a sunglasses company), but eventually this pose was never chosen. I later modified it a little and kept it.
Gouache on ivory board – 14 inches x 19 inches

It is a pure pop art wicked piece! I love the way you have used plain colors, the very precise and limited shades really give that sunny feeling.

Great one Chris! only one small thing! why there’s only shadow on teh clothes… shadows should also be on the skin…isn’t it?
Chris Baker replied
Many thanks Trdib :)
In reality (and perhaps in a photograph), yes, there would be shadows on the skin – and her hair also…. As this is a design / illustration, I opted not to use shadows here as they would have appeared too harsh for the overall linear feel of the image.
By way of reference: I see from your goldfish TShirt design you have a strong ‘window’ reflection on the fish bowl, which would suggest in reality that there would be shadows & highlights on the fish also (cartoon or not) from that angle, yet as the designer, you chose to disregard such superfluous details as they’d only serve to distract ones attention away from the main visual message of your design….
Hope that makes some sense :)

SNik
stunningly impressive. great use of neutral white
Chris Baker replied
Thanks, SNik :)
Funny you should mention that, I was just putting forward my thoughts on creative use of white space on another site (in relation to the insignificance of detail within a design), so I appreciate your comment on this a lot :)
atong

Chris Baker replied
