Mongolian Meeting

I painted this group portrait some time back, and greatly enjoyed depicting the richness of colour, texture and light – hopefully also capturing the spirit of these wonderful people, that they enjoy within their culture.
They are sitting in a yurt, listening attentively to a European translator describing the differences between our culture and their own.

Chris, this is so fantastic….I was drawn to the way you painted the ‘light’....
    just inspiring!
    Cathy

  • Chris Baker replied

Thank you so much Kathy – Yes; this painting was always going to be about the light essentially – I should have mentioned that in the centre of the yurt is an old iron stove that gave off a rich peachy-golden glow – quite the opposite of the cold, stark intense light coming from outside….

The light is stunning and I really like the placement of the man in the middle with his compelling eyes, beautifully painted hands and the light on the side of his face. How on earth do you learn to paint light like that. I wish you could give me some painting lessons. B

  • Chris Baker replied

I guess in short I just experimented for a couple of years until I found some things that started falling into place; never knew any other painters back then to ask ;)
Also read a ton about other artists techniques… (Waaay before PC’s came onto the scene with ‘Google’ et al etc.)

Congratulations on winning the PiMT challenge

You and your work will be featured for a week.

  • Chris Baker replied

    Hi Marilyn,
This has definitely made my week hearing this news, and not least because of the particular group that it’s in… (any style of painting created recently should be a part of ‘PiMT’ per se – but that topic is for a seperate debate – perhaps a forum post….?)
    Thank you so much :)

  • Aquarelle

    Aquarelle

Chris congratulations on your challange in…this work is exceptional and I am not at all surprised it should be recognised as such.

We have a lot in common, I lived in Asia for a while and my passion for painting faces is one that draws me to scenes like this, normally I will paint one or two faces in detail and then slightly work loose on the others so I am completely fascinated in your stunning detail here which demands incredible skill at an artists hand.

Well done and I am thrilled to see your compositions and paintings.

    Jean

  • Chris Baker replied

Hi Jean, and thank you so much !!
I was very happy to read about the win yesterday – it meant a lot to me :)
    .
I actually prefer painting and drawing quite a bit looser than this, and am trying to finish off some new paintings to reflect this….. I’m curious to see if the good folks here who like detailed work also appreciate the much less detailed pieces (?)

    Cheers :)

  • TedBlackall

    TedBlackall

The canvas seems infused with the paint/light rather than applied.
How do you do this Chris?

  • Chris Baker replied

    Hi Ted,
Basically, by keeping the darker (shadowed & deeper hues) more transparent than the highlights (which are built up gradually to opaque highlights – See techniques by Rembrandt, many Dutch masters of the 18th century and not least Lucien Freud also :)

no, this I checked after reading your curious rejection post.. just will make one
point there are times in any field when some individuals feel very intimidated by another individual’s genius. This could definitely be the case in your situation! Dismiss this group as an irritation with the contempt they deserve. Move on, Chris
with the full support of the ton of artists above…woops sorry, a trite wordy!
