Artist's Description

Taken at Burnsall Church, Yorkshire Dales. Burnsall Parish is in Skipton Deanery in the Diocese of Bradford. There are two churches in the parish of Burnsall: St Wilfrid’s in Burnsall village, and St John’s, a ‘chapel of ease’ in the nearby village of Appletreewick.

This is of St Wilfrid’s. St Wilfrid’s history goes right back to its foundation by St Wilfrid of Ripon before 700AD. The font remains from an original Norman church. The oldest part of present day building is the twelfth century South Chantry. The Tower and western portion of the church were built during the reign of Henry VIII. There are a number of Viking stones in an interesting exhibition at the back of the church. The welcoming lych-gate swings on a central post.
