Someone tell me

what I need to do to be good. LOL

Seriously, I am such an amateur and a wannabe photographer, but I want to get better!!! So I need some blatantly honest critiques.

What would I need to do in order to actually SELL something?!

I can handle it, so bring ‘em on!!

You photos are great! Just keep at it. I haven’t sold anything either so we are in the same boat! I have been taking photos for a long time but not on a digital camera so this is new to me the digital age. Just keep on shooting and you will sell! Your work is great.

    Nellie,

I think you have a good eye and would recommend shooting as much as possible. You seem to compose well. You can get some books that show you different techniques to try and you can always roam around redbubble to get inspiration – there are some fantastic photographers on here! Also, I go by the philosophy of “through quantity may come quality” – that if you shoot 100 shots, you could get 20 good shots and about 5 great shots.

Not sure what gear you have but would recommend a DSLR to get your creative juices flowing. Get the best quality lens as possible.

I also have not sold anything yet. I would keep in mind what people would want to hang in their homes. Landscapes, macro flowers and abstract photographs are probably popular.

    Good luck.

Geoff, thanks a lot for the comment and advice!

Right now I have a Fuji Finepix S5100, but believe I will be in the market for something bigger and better in the near future. Although, maybe I should actually learn to use what I have before I upgrade! I am just now trying to learn the settings and have a bunch of books that I just checked out from the library, because I really do want to get better. I am also thinking of taking a class in the spring.

    Again, thanks! :)

Look at other people’s work and examine what it is that you like about it.
Once you can identify what it is that you like about it, you can try to reproduce something similar of your own.
    It really works

Good idea, Daijiro. Thank you. :)

I have to say Daijiro’s comment worked for me too….look for the things you like, and try to do them yourself, read read read, practise practise practise, and then read and practise some more :)

You’ve got some great work Nellie. My advice? Take LOTS and LOTS of photos. My current camera is 10 months old and has 16,000 shots on the counter. :)

As others have said, you have a good eye. The Fuji S5xxx cameras have RAW facility and manual settings from memory, so don’t be afraid to use them! Learn how changes to aperture and shutter speed effect the image.

also, don’t use the lcd to compose shots at arms length! Use the viewfinder, if you don’t already. That way, you eventually feel the viewfinder and camera become an extension of yourself and changing settings, etc for the result you want become second nature.

    Best advice I can give?

Enjoy your photography, take photos for yourself. If you love a photo, ask yourself what you love about it. if you’re dissatisfied with a photo, try to understand why it doesn’t quite work.

    Stringer, you name it! LOL

James, thanks so much for your honesty and advice! :) I am trying to learn how to adjust aperture, shutter speed, etc. and have been playing around a lot lately. I still have a long way to go, but I think I’ve learned a little bit at least!

Thanks again to everyone who has responded.

Nellie, No worry mate! You have some incredible images here at Red bubble to challenge your thinking and get out there and shoot. When I started, you had to pay to develop a roll of film – flubs and all! In the digital age just delete errors and learn. Download the really good ones. challenge your self to make good ones even better everyday. You’ll learn!

    Do it for fun!

    Hang in there Nellie!
2 years ago, I had to ask what the word composition meant.
Had no idea what depth of field or POV (point of view) really was..
and had joined a different website full of pros. Talk about feeling
underqualified! But the more I hung out with them, I studied their
works, and techniques, until I developed my own (somewhat) abstract
style. I see your style emerging, and I like what I see! Barn Door is terrific..
and so is the mood in your B&W teddy bear shot. Keep studying the books..
remember, education is power..and NEVER be afraid of being yourself and
showing others who you are! Even if it means you think nobody will get it..
it’s who you are, and you are beautiful. Let it shine!!

    Drop me a line anytime.
    :-)
