Artist's Description

I encountered this bizarre sight just outside of Bourke in western NSW, Australia in late March this year. There had been heavy recent rain so many frogs had bred and metamorphosed.

Australia’s premier burrowing frog, the Tiddalik Cyclorana platycephala can remain underground for up to 7 years so requires some seriously good conditions to lure them from underground. The heavy rain meant it was an opportunity to breed and more importantly to replenish those food reserves. This unfortunate metamorph Neobatractus sudelli was the Tiddalik’s next meal.

We encountered them eating their own species and others (as above).

Nikon D300 +Tamron 90mm macro.
