Eat your heart out Faberge!
We found these metamorph Southern Holy Cross Frogs hiding in kangaroo and goat foot prints in damp ground out in a national park near Bourke in western NSW, Australia.
They eat tiny insects which are caught with a quick flick of the tongue. Being burrowing frogs the adults get much larger and spend the dryer periods underground, emerging to feed and breed whenever there is sufficient rain. I’d never seen them so small and so beautifully coloured. They are so ornate they remind me of the finely detailed miniature art work that makes the Faberge eggs so famous.
Unfortunately, unlike the faberge eggs, the frogs weren’t encrusted with gold. :(

We were actually photographing another frog and I noticed them trying to stay moist in the imprint of goat and kangaroo hooves.

they are a very beautiful species. Unfortunately only the young animals maintain their bright yellow colouration.
