Peel Castle
Peel Castle, on the Isle of Man, is one of my favourite places in the world. On this side of the world, most people don’t even know where the Isle of Man is, and those who do usually think of motorcycle racing or tail-less cats, not castles. The castle is on its own little island (accessed via a causeway) and has an atmosphere fitting for its fascinating history. The spectacular archaeological find of Norse grave-goods (including an impressive necklace) has confirmed its early habitation, and the ruins of St. German’s Cathedral within the castle walls are stunning. It was last used to ward off the French navy in the nineteenth century. I think it’s one of the world’s best-kept castle secrets!

Perfect! I am visiting the Island next week, after 22 years. Thank for reminding me of this magical building.
