Darwin is a little Tawny Owl (Strix aluco) who is just over a year old. Tawny Owls are native to the UK but are a very secretive species as they are purely nocturnal so there is little known about their population numbers in the wild.
This photo clearly shows Darwin’s heart shape face. This actually acts like a satellite dish and funnels sound across his facial plate into each ear. His ears are hidden under lots of feathers just on the edge of the “feathery heart” and he actually has wonky ears – this is something called asymetric hearing, allowing him to pin point the exact location of where his dinner is hiding!
