Artist's Description

This is my version of Hello Kitty’s mother in Japanese tradition, maneki neko or ‘beckoning cat’ in English, whose paw beckoning in Japanese fashion is supposed to bring in customers (if the left paw as here) or money (if the right paw), or any number of things nowadays depending on the colour and other attributes. This version is inspired by my sweetheart Lotus, the Japanese bobtail, whose photo you can see here. Maneki neko is wearing the traditional bell and red Jizo-style bib and holding an old fashioned gold coin called a koban. At her feet is a carp, another symbol of good fortune. The characters on the left read ‘maneki neko’ (‘beckoning cat’). To see all the details of the design, please be sure to look at the large view.
