Exercise #8
1984 came, and went…..they say….
Exercise #8 belongs to the following groups:
Writing WorkshopThe light from the candles flickered and danced about the small, secluded booth toward the back of the restaurant.
His strong right hand was outstretched across the table gently cradling the wine bottle between them. His gaze moved tentativley from the bottle to her. Her hair was golden in the soft light. There was now a fire in her eyes that he had not seen before.
“Rob….just wait one little minute. What are you trying to tell me? What do you mean….you didn’t write the letter. Next you’ll tell me you didn’t even put it into the bottle yourself !!”
“Helen, I may have….there were so many bottles. I couldn’t….”
“There’s more than one bottle !! There’s more than one letter ??”
“Darling, the contents of the letter was mostly the same…of course, there may have been variances caused by the various translations, but….”
“Rob….my God….translations!! Am I part of a cast of thousands !!”
“Helen, my darling….I am not sure. The studio execs said that market share should be good….”
“The studio execs ???!!”
“Helen, it was the studio that found me on the island. They said “Crusoe Finds a Wife” would be the hit of next season.”
“Rob ! We’re on television !” She straightened, just a little….her shoulders back, just a little….and her left hand deftly whisked some strands of hair away from her face.
“Helen, I wouldn’t do that to you. No, it’s being aimed directly at the Blog market.”
“The Blog market !?”
“Yes darling. You see that large LCD screen over there. That guy on the screen…...the one at the keyboard, the one who looks like he has no life away from his computer…..he is keying in what we are really saying to each other as we hold this bottle of wine….. pretty slick idea eh?”
“Rob, darling…...do I have to win this competition…..or do I get some royalty on a per word basis?”
Helen turned toward the large LCD screen, and smiled. She looked positively radiant.

Talk about casting a net hoping for a great catch and getting….this. I love the humor you’ve infused here – and just the right amount.
As for the exercise and subtext. Here is how subtext is explained over at wikipedia.
Look it over when you have some time so you can get a better idea of how subtext works.
I do like this though. Keep up the great work!

Reminder to self…..take note of bolded words in the challenge or exercise…lol
But…as they say….you don’t learn to swim without getting your toes wet… :)... I now know more of “subtext”, and had quite a laugh in the process
A fun exercise JC….thankyou

You’re welcome Neil. And as I’ve said, we are laid back here. The point being to practice new things and to work on learning more about your craft – and yourself (as a writer).
I love that you can laugh at this. Shows you have a wonderful attitude.
