Cathedral Crypt - Winchester
The statue “Sound II” stands silently in the water in the crypt under the Ancient Normal Cathedral in Winchester U.K. The whole gigantic building sits on watery foundations! This part of the Cathedral dates back to 1079 and now stands well under the local water table, therfore is often flooded
This is a three exposure HDR ( long exposures, it is dark) -1, 0, +1 . Taken from my “gorillapod” off the bottom step before the water.
Cathedral Crypt - Winchester belongs to the following groups:
All About Water, Historic Churches, Historic Landmarks of Europe and United Kingdom Available for sale asGreeting Cards, Matted Prints, Laminated Prints, Mounted Prints, Canvas Prints and Framed Prints

Thanks mate. It is strange that they put a “modern” statue in such an ancient place, but there is no doubt that it “works”

Amazing reflection,, and comp…...this is beautiful!!!!!
NeilAlderney replied
Ta. It was taken through a gate, as it is locked when flooded, which is most of the time

Glorius color, It is so gothic, I was taken aback by the statue,
I almost had a “photoshop ” take on it for a minute. Good Job.
NeilAlderney replied
Thanks. It really looks like that. It is a very special place. There is (apparently) an ancient well around the corner that is exactly under teh high Altar, that was sacred in Roman times. The few days a year it is not flooded they will take a small group around to look at it

Great picture !!
Love the reflecton and colors of the wall
Are you sure its not Photoshopped???
LOL Joke ;)
NeilAlderney replied
LOL! the “flood” filter you think? It is AMAZING to go down through a tiny medieval wooden door duck down going down the tiny stairs, look up, then gaze upon this! You should do it if you come to Winchester!
whilst the photo is not up to the RB standard, I have a photo on Flickr that shows where this shot was taken from:
I don’t know if this will work…
NeilAlderney replied
No it didn’t LOL – I tried to embed a little image..

LumenLux
Beautiful photograph, well done! Do I understand correctly that this photo-art is currently considerably more beautiful/appealing than the view in person?
NeilAlderney replied
Thanks for the comment mate!
No you are incorrect! Nothing can convey just how beautiful the actual PLACE is. My image has a wonderful glow that is a simple result of 3 long exposures made into an HDR & then tomemapped (with care!)
Imagine this: Enter a huge, ancient Cathedral, go around the side of the high alter and find a TINY and ancient wooden door you have to crouch down to squeeze through, a damp smell. Then steep narrow stairs into the dark, an iron fence to your left, you are standing on a stone platform above the water that can fit about 4 people. As your eyes get used to the dark you see water and looking across you see this!
Then you think that this “room” the catacombs below the Cathedral were built more than one thousand years ago…
How can photo-art be more appealing than that!
You can see what the entrance looks like here if you like
Rosy Kueng
Congratulations on winning the Challenge!!!!!!!!!
NeilAlderney replied
Thanks for the flowers etc. Rosy!
LumenLux
Thank you Neal for the clarification. It appears I was commending your photography at the expense of the inherent beauty you found. Both are clearly wonderful!

i didnt suspect for a moment it was HDR – well, looked a tiny bit like it but didnt really realise until i read your comment. That shows something…
definitively a favourite. ;)
NeilAlderney replied
Thanks a lot! I have spent a lot of time trying to make HDR images that look like they are not HDR, so to speak. Not “overprocessed” or “cartoony”. That does have it’s place, but not with this image.
