Pathway through the stars

Pathway through the stars

Following on from my first attempt at star trails, while in the Grampians with Jared and Lee, Jared and I went out to Lake Fyans to try our luck. This is my second attempt at star trails. Still learning but improving I think.
Jared’s amazing first attempt is here

Camera: Canon 5D
Lens: EF 17-40 f4.0
Focal length: 22mm (Note – full frame sensor)
Shutter Speed: 30 seconds x 111 exposures
Aperture: f4.5
ISO: 400
White balance: Auto
Format: RAW
Drive Mode: Burst
Tripod, remote shutter release
Post Processing: Lightroom – Exposure + 1.52, straighten, slight crop
Photoshop – Chris Schur’s Star Trails Action Slight Levels, slight curves

Lessons Learnt… Next time, shoot at 800 to get more light. Pay more attention to composition of the foreground.

  • Steven Pearce

    Steven Pearce

    WOH DUDE I’M FREAKING OUT!

great image Neil, were you using the timer release or just the remote release.. I hope you had the timer release having shot 111 images.

  • Neil Boucher replied

Lol Thanks Steve… You should try it sometime. All you need to do is set your camera to “Burst” mode, 30 second shutter speed, then lock your remote on and go have a coffee or whatever. You should be able to get some awsome shots out there in the centre without city lights!

  • Neil Boucher replied

Wow man, I just imagined doing this over Ularu! Woohoo!
The secret is you have to point towards the South Celestial Pole (Basically a bit above and to the right of the Southern Cross, but there is a much more accurate way) so it means you need to be able to get to the North of whatever you want in the foreground.

  • Neil Boucher replied

My head is spinning thinking of places you could use for foreground!

  • Steven Pearce

    Steven Pearce

DERRRRR lock the remote.. you know I probably would never have thought about locking the remote, sigh.

I’d love to shoot the stars out here but buy the time I have spare time at night around the camp all I want to do is sleep. Will make the effort!

  • Neil Boucher replied

Oh sleep is overrated don’t you know?
Actually if you are camped nearby you can just set it going and forget it till the morning. If it is anything like my 5D the battery runs out after an hour or so anyway and it just stops. Um, recommend not doing it if you don’t have spare batteries though!
