This is one heck of a fine image, Neil. Not only for the shear beauty of the scene, but for the wonderful example of structural geology. Note the fractures in the rocks; in each polygon, there are two angles that are 60 degrees. My sense is, too, that these are very old rocks. Now, for the photo itself; your composition is exquisite; with the ye moveing down the fracture lines out to sea, and along the other direction to the right. You also have a knack for highlighting some of the most beautiful skies I’ve ever seen. This is a superb image in so many ways! Excellent work! Cheers! Chris

Stunning composition, colours, scenery … I’ve learned a new word today!!! I’ve seen tesselated rocks before and never knew what to call them! Thanks Neil!

  • Neil Boucher

    Neil Boucher

    Thanks again everyone!
Rosalie Tesselation basically means tiling. My understanding is that it is formed by cracking and erosion of the volcanic stone. Interstingly, in my other image of this formation, you can see that the lines become raised and the ‘tiles’ become depressed.
