FOSSIL FIND!!! - Nautilus? by

I couldn’t believe my luck today in stumbling across a large fossil! Since my neighbors sleep during the day, I left a second time in the afternoon to go exploring and give them a chance to catch a little more shuteye. I rambled and wandered and almost literally stumbled over this fossil. My son said he thought it was some kind of Nautilus, because only the Nautilus had these chambers. He said it was the precursor to the Squid. Here is a link to a photo of that on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.o/wiki/File:Nautilus_profil... But I never realized they got so big! My shoe size is 8 1/2, so you can have some sense of how large the fossil is. The University will probably come to see if it’s collectible.

HAH! This is an appropriate find for the Navigator! :))

fossil find, nautilus

I have spent most of my career as a French professor and a research librarian, and have been reinventing myself as a writer. I’m currently working on a book. My interest in photography began with the discovery of my friend Bonnie’s beautiful photo gallery on Red Bubble. I never cease to be amazed at the little discoveries one makes of God’s awesome creation.

Great find and shot. The stone must be shale. It’s a wonder it has lasted so long.

  • That’s what I thought, but it’s hard to say. My son told me he thinks it’s a Nautilus, what was seen before the Squid. I’m going to see if I can find the link to a photo of what it looked like and post it here. Yes, it’s a very exciting find for me, because I never saw a Nautilus before. I couldn’t believe how BIG it was! Glad to see you, Beth! :)) Thanks for you nice comments. Check back for the link.

    Amazing, so big! Great find.

  • Thank you, Cindy! I was SO excited when I found it! i called the university, but they decided it wasn’t the whole creature, so they didn’t want it. I never saw anything so huge in such a shell, and then when my son told me it was the precursor to the Squid, I was REALLY thrilled! :)) I love sharing these things with people like you who find it awesome too! Thnk you so much, Cindy!
