Only a small scrap of brownie! What do I look like, a birdbrain?

grackle, resentful

I have spent most of my career as a French professor and a research librarian, and have been reinventing myself as a writer. I’m currently working on a book. My interest in photography began with the discovery of my friend Bonnie’s beautiful photo gallery on Red Bubble. I never cease to be amazed at the little discoveries one makes of God’s awesome creation.

Aaaaw! Why doesn’t SOMEBODY give him something?! ’Tis the season of giving, after-all! Absolutely great shot Brenda!

  • Well, it was New Year’s Day, and hardly a creature was stirring! There were only a few of us at the bus stop, and I hadn’t bought much of anything I could give him. I gave him a small scrap of brownie, but didn’t know if it was ok to feed a bird chocolate. He scarfed it up right quick. And that was all I had to throw him. He seemed mostly upset that the lady eating chips there had not given him the tiniest bite. And she told me she wasn’t going to either. She wanted ALL of her chips for herself! At first I thought that was a bit selfish, and then it occurred to me that he was a BIRD! He could find WORMS! But he was spoiled, an HEB (grocery store) bird, and he wanted TREATS! Plus it was a cold day, and he probably wasn’t getting the handouts to which he had become accustomed. So after I thought bird-worms, I didn’t feel so bad about things. But he was pouting and in a very bad mood about it, poor thing.

  • Thanks for caring about the little guy, and glad you liked the shot. He was kind of funny, actually.

ok, you were totally teasing that poor photogenic birdie!!
    nice work…

  • Nah, I wasn’t teasing him. I was sad that the woman wouldn’t throw him a chip. But if I had gone back into the store to buy a bag of chips, I would have missed my bus. I did give him a small bite of brownie, but didn’t know if chocolate would harm him. Ergo, he was very unhappy. But he did make a remarkable photographic subject. See my photo “chemically imbalanced grackle”. You will see how deep was his emotion. He was very interesting, and I hated that I couldn’t help him out, but he really did have a bad attitude…. I’ve never seen a bird do that.

Oh, the expression! Great eyes. Love the stance. I really like this photo!

  • Yes, he became even more discontented too, and went off to the corner and sulked. Go to “Chemically Imbalanced” Grackle and see for yourself. He was very put out. It was a holiday, cold, and he knew something was going on, and he wasn’t getting his usual handouts. Poor guy. I felt sorry for him, but it was kind of funny. Just when you think birds can fend for themselves….
